The Race
A time for premature reflection
With 6 games remaining in the 2007 MLB Season, the playoff match-ups in the National League are all but set.
As New York, Philly, Chicago, Milwaukee, Arizona and San Diego dig deep for those last few wins, this is
also a time for these organizations to begin to evaluate the 162 game season that they have just endured.
What could have been done in the last six months to ensure that these teams are already a lock into the
post-season and not in the midst of a down-to-the-wire Pennant Race?

Take Milwaukee for example… Without the 3 blown saves in May and the Crucial ninth inning error against St. Louis in July, the Brew Crew would be 2 games ahead of the Cubbies in the Central instead of 2 games behind.
Now, you may think that 4 games isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things but when it’s the difference between
being in the “driver’s seat” and playing “catch up” with only 6 games to play…
Those four valuable games prove crucial.
Should the Brew Crew miss the playoffs by one game, there will most definitely be a lot of “could have, would
have, and should have” within the Milwaukee clubhouse and front office.
Bottom line, it’s these moments in late September that make this game so special. A group of guys that become family, live together and eventually die together in September. Not because of those four games, but because
of the culmination of events throughout all 162.
